Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film was a groundbreaking masterpiece that addressed many of the same social issues we continue to struggle with today. OCP planned to replace human law enforcement officers with machines, but as the movie shows, the human spirit will always stand as long as people continue to stand up for what is just and right. This is what happens when old habits meet a new era. The original 1987 RoboCop already anticipated this future, as it warned of the ever-encroaching power of corporations, robots, and hyper-violence. This movie’s representation of a dystopic future landscape remains eerily accurate, especially in relation to actualized modern Detroit. The company OCP took their mission to restore the city to the next level by creating RoboCop. But is this truly a solution to Detroit’s problems, or is it just a temporary bandage over a larger issue? Detroit can neither survive nor thrive if it is simply turned into a glorified theme park for wealthy people to walk around in while the rest slave away in the streets. That might have been the original vision of OCP in the Robocop we knew then, but is it the case now? The new RoboCop looks far off into the future, with automation and tank-like drones drowning out the humans that built the city. While the allure of turning Detroit into a shiny city-state run by corporations was the old way, the true intersection of technology and humanity in the new RoboCop is sure to be awaited eagerly. What will it take for the RoboCop we've known for decades to be resurrected? The original movie resonated with so many people because it addressed the important issues of its time. Crime was a major problem in Detroit in the 1980s and the recent release of the new RoboCop has revitalized the same idea. The 2014 film RoboCop was a gritty and dystopic view of a future Detroit where the crime-infested streets are crawling with criminal gangsters, corrupt politicians, and corporate greed.
